DO:
- Be polite and respectful
- Keep your hands visible(if at night turn on lights)
- Document encounters immediately (you can even record! — Police should allow you to record them as long as you do not break any other laws… especially if you make them aware of your recording)
DON’T:
- Answer questions if you do not feel comfortable
- Give false documents
- Lie
- Argue, resist, flee, or obstruct
Watch out for TRICK QUESTIONS:
Trick Question: “Have you had any alcoholic beverages tonight?”
Best Answer: “Respectfully officer, I don’t have to answer that.”
Trick Question: “Refusing to answer my question is considered suspicious. Why are you resisting?”
Best Answer: “I’m not ‘resisting. I do not have to answer anything.” — This is your 5th amendment right!
Trick Question: “If you have nothing to hide, you shouldn’t mind if I look around, will you?”
Best Answer: “I’m sorry officer, however I don’t consent to searches.” — This is your 4th amendment right!

Refusing a search without a valid warrant or refusing to answer a question which may be incriminating is not labeled as admissions of guilt and is your right.
